A spammer-released worm family (W32.Mimail.E, with reference to W32.Fizzer-A and SoBig) is infecting hundreds of thousands of primarily home broadband machines to form a spam-sending and attack botnet used to overwhelm anti-spam organizations (Spamhaus, Spamcop, SPEWS) with sustained DDoS attacks; the worms spread via email/Outlook, install mini web servers and backdoors, and have caused multi-month disruptions requiring anti-DDoS mitigation.
