White House calls attention to 'hard problem' of securing internet traffic routing

The White House Office of the National Cyber Director published a 19-page roadmap urging network operators to strengthen Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) security, noting the protocol lacks adequate protections and can be abused for BGP hijacks that enable cryptocurrency theft, malware distribution, DDoS amplification, and service disruptions; the guidance recommends wider adoption of RPKI, ROA, and ROV and establishes a cross-sector Internet Routing Security Working Group to drive implementation.
