In June, Columbia University experienced a cyberattack (breach discovered June 24, initial breach on May 16) that exposed personal data for 868,969 people — including Social Security numbers, application and academic records, financial aid and health insurance information. The university reported disruption to IT services, said the intruder was a politically motivated actor who targeted student data (and has claimed breaches at other universities), and noted that stolen data was shared with media outlets; Columbia is offering two years of credit monitoring to affected individuals.
