Instagram to start alerting parents when children search for terms relating to self-harm

Meta announced that Instagram will start notifying parents (via WhatsApp, email, or text) when teens repeatedly search for language related to self-harm or suicide within a short period, initially for users in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Canada, and later expanding globally; the system will use thresholds informed by behavior analysis and expert advice to avoid excess notifications and will also be expanded to flag teens’ AI conversations about self-harm.
