Texas sues Netflix over alleged data practices that create ‘surveillance machinery’ without user consent

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing Netflix, alleging the company secretly tracked and shared subscribers’ viewing habits, device and location data, and children’s behavioral information with advertisers and data brokers without proper consent. The complaint asserts Netflix logs roughly 5 petabytes of user behavior daily, merges IP-based location with demographics to create granular audience segments, and shares data with parties such as Experian, Acxiom and ad-tech platforms; Texas seeks fines and injunctions including limits on data collection and autoplay for kids’ profiles.
