Thailand to take in 7,000 rescued from illegal cyber scam hubs in Myanmar

Thailand and regional partners have rescued roughly 7,000 people from illegal call centers in Myanmar and are coordinating transfers and repatriation as part of a wider effort to dismantle cross-border cyber scam networks; these operations—linked to trafficked victims forced into romance fraud, cryptocurrency swindles and fake investment schemes—have caused estimated losses of $18–$37 billion in 2023 and involved around 120,000 trafficked individuals, with enforcement complicated by armed groups and relocation of criminal networks.
