Insurance firm Globe Life to warn 850,000 of potential data theft following extortion attempt

Globe Life disclosed an October 2024 incident in which hackers accessed customer databases of independent agency owners and extorted the company; approximately 5,000 individuals’ data was confirmed accessed (including SSNs, contact and health information), and the company is notifying and offering credit monitoring to about 850,000 additional people whose records were stored in the affected databases. The company did not pay the extortion demand, notified law enforcement, and reported that some stolen data was distributed to short sellers and plaintiffs’ attorneys.
