Microsoft names developers behind illicit AI tools used in celebrity deepfake scheme

Microsoft filed an amended civil complaint alleging a global cybercrime network called Storm-2139 exploited exposed customer credentials to modify and resell access to generative AI tools that produced harmful content (including non-consensual celebrity deepfakes); the filing names six alleged operators, led to a court seizure of a connected website, revealed doxing and internal dispute among group members, and prompted Microsoft to prepare criminal referrals and further investigations.
