US charges Iranians for sprawling hacking campaign on government agencies, universities

The DOJ unsealed a superseding indictment charging 17 individuals allegedly connected to Iran's Mabna Institute and the IRGC for a sprawling hacking-for-hire campaign beginning around 2013 that breached hundreds of universities, multiple companies, and government and U.N. organizations, stole at least 31 terabytes of academic and proprietary data (including about 8,000 professor email accounts), and reportedly sold the stolen materials to customers in Iran; U.S. authorities have sought suspects with $10 million rewards and noted significant remediation costs to affected universities.
