More than 340,000 impacted by cyberattack on library in large Washington county

A ransomware attack on the Pierce County Library System in April 2025 forced a full shutdown of systems and resulted in the theft of personal data for over 340,000 individuals; the INC ransomware gang claimed responsibility. Reported stolen items include patrons' names and dates of birth and, for current and former employees, Social Security numbers, financial account details, driver’s license and passport numbers, credit card information, and medical/insurance data — a significant breach that disrupted library services and follows a pattern of ransomware targeting library systems.
