FTC says it won’t enforce COPPA against proper use of age verification tools

The FTC issued a policy statement clarifying that websites and online services may deploy age verification technologies without COPPA enforcement risk if they use the data solely for verification, do not retain it, provide clear notices to parents and children, ensure third-party confidentiality, and apply reasonable security safeguards. The agency also plans to review the COPPA Rule to further address age verification.
