Major Australian energy supplier confirms customer data compromised

Origin Energy, a Sydney-based electricity and gas retailer serving nearly 5 million customers, confirmed a data breach that may have exposed customer account information, names, addresses, dates of birth and partial payment details (last four digits of credit cards and last three digits of bank account numbers). The company apologized, is working with federal authorities and independent cyber experts to investigate and understand the scope of impacted customers; the report also notes a recent separate medical-records compromise at Partnered Health.
