US accuses Russian of helping Kremlin hack Ukraine’s state computer systems

A U.S. Department of Justice indictment alleges that Amin Stigal assisted Russia’s GRU in deploying WhisperGate, a destructive wiper disguised as ransomware, to compromise and destroy dozens of Ukrainian government computer systems in January 2022, exfiltrate sensitive data (including patient records), deface websites, and probe/attack allied infrastructure; the attacks are compared to the NotPetya campaign and data stolen was offered for sale online.
