Albemarle County experienced a ransomware attack discovered on June 11 that caused multi-day phone and IT outages and likely exposed sensitive PII (including Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers and military IDs) of county and public school employees and potentially residents; investigators believe the breach affected local servers only, and federal and state authorities (FBI, CISA, Virginia State Police Cyber Fusion Center) were notified while the county is offering one year of identity protection to those impacted.
