Cybercriminals are poisoning search results to promote fake download pages and malicious repositories that host corrupted versions of popular applications; victims who download and extract distributed ZIP archives can execute disguised batch files which install a remote administration tool (RAT), enabling data theft, deployment of further malware, and persistent access. Unit 42 analyzed the campaign and highlighted the attackers' use of legitimate-looking filenames and branding to evade detection, and the report advises verifying sources and downloading directly from official vendor sites.
