Apple and Google have jointly begun a beta rollout (starting May 11, 2026) of end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging between iPhone and Android devices using the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol from the RCS Universal Profile 3.0. The update, enabled automatically (iOS 26.5 and a supported carrier on iPhone; latest Google Messages on Android), will display a lock icon for encrypted chats and is intended to extend cross-platform message privacy without replacing iMessage.
