UK to buy nuclear-capable F-35As that can't be refueled from RAF tankers

The UK government will acquire at least 12 F-35A fighters to support NATO’s nuclear deterrent, shifting part of its planned F-35 mix from B to A variants; however, the F-35A’s boom refueling system is incompatible with the RAF’s probe-and-drogue tankers, prompting reliance on NATO partners for air-to-air refueling. While the F-35A offers longer range and nuclear certification (B61), the RAF plans to use them primarily for training with 207 Squadron’s OCU, with nuclear capability as a secondary role; the decision has drawn criticism for reducing carrier operability and raising questions about nuclear munitions sourcing.
