Nigerian faces up to 102 years in the slammer for $1.5M phishing scam

A Nigerian national, Ebuka Raphael Umeti, was convicted for his role in a business email compromise (BEC) scheme that used phishing, domain spoofing, VoIP numbers, Discord communications, and malware to gain remote access and siphon roughly $1.5M from US companies; co-conspirator Franklin Okwonna has also been convicted and an alleged malware author, Mohammed Butaish, remains at large. The indictment covers activity from 2016 through 2021 with multiple successful thefts, and sentencing for the convicted individuals is scheduled later this year.
