Toronto Zoo disclosed that a January 2024 cyberattack by the Akira ransomware group compromised visitor and membership data going back to 2000 (including names, addresses, contact details and, for some transactions in 2022–2023, partial card details) and exposed current and former staff records back to 1989; Akira claims 133 GB of stolen data is still available for download. The zoo has informed the privacy regulator, offered credit monitoring to affected individuals, and says it has strengthened its IT defenses with support from the City of Toronto.
