The Texas Department of Transportation discovered on May 12 that a compromised user account was used to improperly download nearly 300,000 crash reports from its Crash Records Information System, exposing sensitive personal and vehicle data (names, addresses, driver license numbers, license plate numbers, insurance policy numbers, etc.). TxDOT is notifying impacted individuals by letter, the Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating, and officials warn the exposed data could be used for insurance fraud, vehicle-sale fraud, and targeted phishing, though credit monitoring was not offered.
