Researchers published a paper describing GhostStripe, an adversarial attack that uses LEDs synchronized with the rolling shutter of CMOS cameras to project imperceptible stripe patterns onto traffic signs, causing self-driving car classifiers to not recognize signs; two variants achieved ~94–97% success in tests against a camera used in Baidu Apollo, though performance degrades in strong ambient light and mitigations (sensor changes, additional cameras, training) were proposed.
