Avis alerts nearly 300k car renters that crooks stole their info

Avis Rent A Car disclosed an August 3–6 security breach affecting roughly 299,006 (reports up to ~400,000) customers across the US and UK, in which an unauthorized party obtained sensitive personal and financial data. Notification filings cite stolen data such as names, postal addresses, email addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, credit card numbers and expiration dates, and phone numbers; the filings also reference possible insider wrongdoing and the company is offering affected customers one year of Equifax monitoring while it enhances security controls.
