America's War on Drugs and Crime will be AI powered, says Homeland Security boss

At the RSA Conference, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas described AI as a double-edged sword and outlined DHS efforts to balance safety with civil liberties, including an AI Safety and Security Board and oversight from the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. He highlighted three pilots: using LLMs to link investigative reports across cases, helping FEMA support underserved communities in applying for resilience grants, and training refugee officers via AI-simulated interviews, while addressing concerns about bias, privacy, and Big Tech influence.
