UK elections are unaffected by China's cyber-interference, says deputy PM

The UK and US publicly attributed 2021 cyber operations to China-linked APT31 (Zirconium), linking the group to a ProxyNotShell-based compromise of Microsoft Exchange that exposed Electoral Commission data (around 40 million voter records) and reconnaissance targeting approximately 43 UK parliamentarians; authorities have since issued indictments, imposed sanctions on alleged operators and a front company, and updated guidance to defend democratic institutions against continued state-aligned espionage.
