FBI: Critical infrastructure suffers spike in ransomware attacks

The FBI IC3 2023 annual report recorded 880,418 complaints and over $12.5 billion in reported losses, with notable year-over-year increases in ransomware incidents and extortion losses; 2,825 reported ransomware infections and 1,193 complaints from critical infrastructure organizations (healthcare, manufacturing, government) were documented. Top ransomware variants affecting critical orgs included LockBit, ALPHV/BlackCat, Akira, Royal, and Black Basta, while investment/cryptocurrency fraud and business email compromise produced the largest monetary losses overall.
