Norway's £10B UK frigate deal could delay Royal Navy ships

Norway has ordered at least five British Type 26 anti-submarine frigates in a multibillion-pound deal, with construction at BAE Systems’ Glasgow yards potentially diverting ships and causing further delays to the Royal Navy’s own replacements for aging Type 23s. The agreement, tied to a broader UK–Norway security partnership focused on countering Russian submarines, aims to accelerate production through expanded facilities but could still create a capability gap for the Royal Navy, while Norway selected Type 26 over French, German, and U.S. alternatives amid U.S. program delays; Canada and Australia have already adopted derivatives of the design.
