Troubled US insurance giant hit by extortion after data leak

Globe Life disclosed an extortion attempt involving stolen customer data for about 5,000 individuals—names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers, and health data—where the unknown threat actor demanded payment and shared limited data with short sellers and plaintiffs' attorneys; the company says there was no ransomware or business interruption and suspects a misconfigured web portal may have enabled unauthorized access.
