Ghost in the shell script: Boffins reckon they can catch bugs before programs run

Researchers are developing static analysis approaches to make Unix shell scripts (e.g., Bash, Zsh) more reliable and safer, aiming to provide pre-runtime guarantees traditionally absent in shell environments. Their work combines identifying script elements suitable for static guarantees, leveraging large language models to validate command documentation against real behavior, and adding safety-aware runtime monitoring to prevent damaging outcomes, with results to be presented at HotOS and code expected to be released.
