A data breach at National Public Data (NPD) resulted in the theft and public dumping/sale of an archive claimed to contain roughly 2.7–2.9 billion records (277GB) of personal data—names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, criminal records and address histories—affecting individuals in the US, UK and Canada; the breach was reportedly carried out in December 2023, leaked in stages starting April 2024, and has been confirmed by NPD, with the stolen dataset circulating on the dark web and being analyzed by researchers.
