Two former RAC call-centre employees unlawfully accessed and sold about 29,500 lines of personal data relating to people involved in road traffic accidents. RAC's security monitoring detected the activity and reported it to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO); both individuals pleaded guilty to offences under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and Data Protection Act 2018 and received six-month prison sentences suspended for 18 months plus community service. The ICO praised RAC's swift action and a Proceeds of Crime hearing is scheduled for March 2025.
