Apple announced PQ3, a post-quantum upgrade to the iMessage protocol that combines Kyber-based key establishment and rekeying with ECC to achieve what it calls “Level 3” security, exceeding protections in widely deployed messaging apps. Available now in developer previews and betas of iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, macOS 14.4, and watchOS 10.4, PQ3 is expected to fully replace the existing protocol by year-end and has been reviewed internally and by external cryptography experts without reported issues.
