You have a fake North Korean IT worker problem – here's how to stop it

Industry security leaders report a surge of North Korea-linked impostor IT job applicants exploiting remote hiring through deepfakes, VPN-masked identities, fabricated credentials, and AI-assisted interview answers to obtain insider access and, in some cases, exfiltrate code or extort employers. Organizations are responding by integrating IOC-informed screening into recruiting tools, strengthening HR–security–legal collaboration, enforcing in-person verification/onboarding for devices, and training a “human firewall” to spot red flags such as shallow LinkedIn profiles, geographic inconsistencies, delayed or coached responses, and call-center environments; the activity is expanding beyond the U.S. to Europe and is expected to be adopted by broader organized crime.
