MI5 has publicly identified the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI) as having strong links to China’s Ministry of State Security and warned that CGTRI-funded academic projects in AI, cybersecurity, covert communications and steganography may have directly improved Chinese espionage capabilities; more than 100 UK-linked academics were involved, and universities are urged to review collaborations and seek legal advice under the National Security Act 2023.
