Congress tries to outlaw AI that jacks up prices based on what it knows about you

U.S. Representatives Greg Casar and Rashida Tlaib introduced the Stop AI Price Gouging and Wage Fixing Act to prohibit the use of advanced AI that analyzes personal data to set prices and wages, following examples like Delta’s AI-driven dynamic pricing. Citing an FTC staff report that found expanding use of surveillance pricing based on personal characteristics, the proposal would empower the FTC, EEOC, states, and individuals to enforce rules, though internal FTC debate and current congressional control cast doubt on its passage.
