EU probes Meta over its provisions for protecting children

The European Commission has launched formal proceedings under the Digital Services Act to assess Meta’s compliance regarding minors’ safety on Facebook and Instagram, scrutinizing potentially addictive interface design, the effectiveness of age-verification, and the adequacy of default privacy and recommendation settings, with fines up to 6% of global turnover possible. This action is part of wider DSA enforcement that has also targeted TikTok and X, while Meta asserts it has invested in youth safety measures and will cooperate with the investigation.
