US proposes ban on Chinese, Russian connected car tech over security fears

The U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security proposed a rule to ban import, sale, and use of connected vehicle (VCS) and automated driving (ADS) hardware/software with ties to China or Russia, citing espionage and data-privacy risks; software restrictions would start with model year 2027 and hardware in model year 2030 (units without a model year in Jan 2029), with an exemption process available. Paired with higher tariffs on Chinese EVs, the move is largely preemptive as no Chinese-branded vehicles are currently sold in the U.S.
