This advisory examines the security and code implications of REX PIR sensors used in electronic access-control systems, demonstrating how spray or smoke can falsely trigger egress sensors and unlock doors. It reviews applicable US codes (IBC, NFPA/Life Safety Code), explains why simple removal is not a compliant remediation, and outlines mitigations including sensor relocation, mechanical/capacitive exit hardware, astragals/weather stripping, and layered monitoring such as pressure mats wired with the REX to detect forced entries.
