Here’s what Google is (and isn’t) planning with SMS account verification

Google is gradually phasing out SMS-based two-step verification across its services and introducing a QR code-based verification flow (with passkeys recommended) to reduce risks tied to SMS such as phishing, carrier vulnerabilities, and SMS-based scams like traffic pumping; the rollout will be regional and gradual, and existing accounts can still use SMS for now.
