EPA will step up inspections of water sector cybersecurity

The EPA warned that cyber threats against U.S. drinking-water systems are increasing in frequency and severity, citing incidents including PLC defacements and a Texas overflow, and linking activity to sophisticated groups such as Sandworm and IRGC-linked actors; the agency found widespread noncompliance with security requirements (over 70%), will increase inspections and enforcement, and urged improvements like MFA and risk assessments to protect critical water infrastructure.
