Russian national extradited to US for alleged involvement in bank-account takeover scheme

Authorities extradited a 36-year-old Russian national, Sergei Anatolyevich Filimonov, accused of running an extensive bank-account takeover campaign beginning November 2023 that spoofed bank domains, purchased sponsored links to direct victims to fraudulent sites, harvested over 5,000 credentials, stored them on a seized domain, and attempted large unauthorized transfers (nearly $5.58M and $735K in specific incidents), with reported attempted losses up to about $28M and confirmed losses of about $14.6M; Filimonov is charged with multiple fraud and identity-theft offenses and pleaded not guilty.
