Cybercrime losses jumped 26% to $20.9 billion in 2025

The FBI IC3 2025 annual report shows cybercrime losses surged to approximately $20.9 billion (a 26% increase year-over-year), with investment-related fraud, business email compromise, tech support scams and phishing driving the majority of losses; victims aged 60+ reported the highest losses. Ransomware and extortion incidents affected all 16 critical infrastructure sectors with 3,600+ ransomware complaints and top variants including Akira, Qilin, INC, BianLian and Play. The report highlights wide use of cryptocurrency and wire transfers in fraud, growing overall volumes (1M+ complaints), and urges vigilance as cybercrime evolves with emerging technologies.
