OpenAI tracked two likely China-origin influence campaigns — one called “Data Center Bandwagon” and another focused on tariffs — that used ChatGPT to produce images and multilingual social posts, posed as U.S. accounts, and employed VPNs and operational security to evade platform enforcement. Researchers found campaign playbooks and ChatGPT-edited reports describing goals of creating credible, persistent accounts and evading detection, but reported low external engagement and did not directly attribute the operations to the Chinese government.
