Researchers from the University of Maryland and UC San Diego showed that with roughly $600 in consumer-grade equipment they could scan 39 geostationary satellites and 411 Ku-band transponders over seven months and collect unencrypted sensitive data — including plaintext SMS, call contents, web traffic, metadata, and military vessel identifiers — demonstrating widespread absence of standardized link- or network-layer encryption on satellite backhaul links and a low barrier to interception.
