The FCC unanimously advanced a notice of proposed rulemaking to strengthen Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) security, requiring broadband providers to develop private BGP security plans and mandating quarterly public progress reports from the top nine providers, moving now to a public comment period. Citing concerns over past BGP-based traffic misrouting allegedly involving a Chinese telecom, the commission also approved a three-year, $200 million cybersecurity pilot for schools and libraries, despite GOP objections over E-Rate program scope.
