FCC wants major telecoms to step up rules around AI-generated robocalls

The FCC has asked major telecom carriers for detailed information on how they authenticate callers and detect AI voice-cloned robocalls after an AI-generated robocall impersonating President Biden was sent to New Hampshire voters and traced to Lingo Telecom and a political marketing firm; the letters probe STIR/SHAKEN attestation practices, Know Your Customer protocols, carrier detection resources, and coordination with traceback groups, and follow proposed fines and criminal charges related to the incident.
