FBI director warns of China’s preparations for disruptive infrastructure attacks

FBI Director Christopher Wray and U.S. intelligence agencies warned that Chinese state-linked hackers—chiefly the APT group Volt Typhoon—have been broadly targeting U.S. critical infrastructure (water, energy, telecommunications, satellite and emergency services) as part of long-term “pre-positioning” activity that could enable disruptive attacks potentially by 2027; agencies are preparing resources to defend against such scenarios while defenders seek more technical detail about the observed activity.
