Microsoft observed Chinese state-linked actors combining AI-generated disinformation (deepfakes, fake anchors, AI-manipulated imagery) to influence elections in Taiwan and the U.S., while multiple associated espionage groups (including APT40/Gingham Typhoon, Raspberry Typhoon, Flax Typhoon, Nylon Typhoon/APT15 and Storm-0062) conducted sophisticated phishing and intrusion campaigns targeting governments, telecommunications, defense and other sectors — with Storm-0062 also exploiting a critical Atlassian Confluence vulnerability in late 2023.
