The Importance of Sensor Integrity in Safety Systems

Project 12 (LOGIIC) research assessed risks in HART-enabled instrumentation and found that attackers who can access Instrument Maintenance/Asset Management Systems could alter sensor/transmitter data, blind operators and SIS, brute-force proprietary device protections, and use vendor-specific commands to make stealthy safety-relevant changes; the report urges verification of DTMs/AMS integrity, use of hardware write-protection where available, improved vendor security, and increased monitoring of ICS networks.
