Implications of IT Ransomware for ICS Environments

This report examines how IT-focused ransomware and self-propagating malware have migrated into Industrial Control System (ICS) environments, reviews historical incidents (WannaCry, NotPetya, Ryuk, LockerGoga), and argues that defenders should prioritize identifying and hardening IT–ICS links, mid-stage detection and mitigation, network segmentation, and ICS-centric recovery planning rather than attempting to directly transplant IT security controls into operational environments.
