Beware Public Wi-Fi Insecurity – Part 1: Reviewing the Neighborhood

The author surveys a downtown business district and finds hundreds of wireless radios with many open or weakly protected networks, common WPS use, and frequent failures such as missing client isolation and unchanged default device credentials. An ISP-deployed ‘city’ guest Wi‑Fi was found to NAT guests via the internal DHCP, enabling access to internal systems (including a firewall UI and an Exchange RDP session); the post recommends avoiding SOHO gear for guest SSIDs, enforcing guest isolation, changing defaults, and raising basic IT security awareness.
